Suit seeks same-sex union recognition

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- The civil union partner of a Chicago woman killed when a concert stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fairgrounds this summer is seeking damages for her loss.

The suit filed on behalf of Alisha Brennon seeks to force the courts in Indiana to recognize the right of same-sex partners to recover damages, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.

Chicagoans Brennon and Christina Santiago made their relationship official this past summer, soon after Illinois' civil union law took effect.

Santiago, 29, was killed and Brennon, 24, was injured in August when an outdoor concert stage collapsed in Indianapolis killing seven people and injuring dozens of others.

Brennon told the Chicago Tribune her lawsuit wasn't filed for monetary reasons but instead so other same-sex couples will have their unions recognized.

Five states, including Illinois, have civil union laws.

In Indiana, only surviving spouses or family members are allowed to file wrongful death suits, legal experts said.
