Exploding toilet injures woman

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A woman was taken to a hospital for injuries suffered when a toilet in a government building in Washington exploded due to "high air pressure," officials said.

Washington's WUSA-TV reported Monday fire spokesman Pete Piringer said the woman's injuries were serious but non-life-threatening. The incident occurred at the General Services Administration regional office building.

Employees later received a memo warning them not to use bathrooms or water in the building at 7th Street and D Street Southwest.

"DO NOT flush toilets or use any domestic water. Due to a mechanical failure, there is high air pressure in the domestic water system that resulted in damage to toilets. The engineering staff is working to correct the issue," the memo said.

"There has been damage to flushed toilets that has resulted in injuries. We will announce when the issue is resolved."
