BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A private investigator hired to find a missing Indiana University student has apologized for criticizing the police chief in Bloomington, Ind.
Richard "Bo" Dietl said he was sorry for comparing Chief Mike Diekhoff to Gomer Pyle, a dim-witted character featured on "The Andy Griffith Show," the Indiana Daily Student, the Indiana University student newspaper, reported.
Dietl, a retired New York police detective, issued the apology during a brief radio interview with Don Imus Monday.
In addition to criticizing Diekhoff, Dietl likened college students to zombies in the film "Night of the Living Dead."
He said he believes drug usage at Indiana University directly affected Lauren Spierer's disappearance after a night of partying June 3.
Dietl was hired by Spierer's family to locate the missing student.
He said he is working on the case with a team of four other retired New York police officers.
