North Carolina child, 4, shot by toddler

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Charlotte, N.C., police say they filed charges against an adult in the apparent accidental fatal shooting of a 4-year-old girl by a toddler playing with a gun.

Erin Melendez, 37, was charged with improperly storing the weapon that caused the death of the youngster in Melendez's apartment Saturday.

Details of the slaying were not released Sunday, but The Charlotte Observer said the trigger apparently was pulled by a young cousin.

The victim, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital Saturday afternoon. Melendez was not in the apartment at the time, but a woman was there watching a number of young children.

The woman, who was not charged, apparently was not in the bedroom where the shooting took place.
