Sen. Hutchison blasts FCC net neutrality

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. Federal Communications Commission is imposing needless rules in its new "net neutrality" regulations, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas said Friday.

The ranking Republican on the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee spoke as the regulations were published in the Federal Register, The Hill reported. The rules, which take effect Nov. 20, ban fixed broadband companies from discriminating against Web sites based on content.

"Companies and industries that use broadband communications have flourished over the last decade without government intervention, yet the FCC has chosen to 'fix' a problem that does not exist," Hutchison said. "Rather than imposing new, unnecessary regulations on one of the few thriving sectors of our economy, government should get out of the way, and allow new jobs and investment in broadband technologies."
