HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Bond was set at $250,000 Monday for a Tennessee woman who police say admitted smothering her newborn twins to death.
Lindsey Lowe, 25, of Hendersonville is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her children following their Sept. 12 birth at the home she shares with her parents.
The Hendersonville Star News reported friends and family members spoke her behalf during an hourlong bail hearing in a Sumner County court.
"She's as good as it gets," Mark Lowe, who found one of the bodies in a laundry basket two days later, said of his daughter. "She's a good girl -- I love her very much."
A woman who said she was a cousin of the defendant told the court Lindsey Lowe is "kind, loving and has a beautiful smile and can always light up a room."
Hendersonville police Detective Steve Malach testified he saw that smile when he went to the dentist's office where she works to take her in for questioning.
"When I first saw her, she was smiling -- she greeted me -- she acted very level-headed, very normal," Malach said.
The investigator said when he started interviewing her he was only aware of one child's body being found but she told him of the second child.
A police affidavit states she said she smothered the infants with her hands to keep her parents from hearing their cries.
"We have two children that are dead at the hands of their mother," Sumner County Assistant District Attorney Ron Blanton said. "This is a horrendous crime. The fact is she hid this pregnancy, she smothered her children ….. The overwhelming issue in this case is probability of conviction, and at this juncture, the state feels that the probability of conviction and the nature of the crimes, set forth in the statute, is so overwhelming, there should be no bond issued in this case."
Lowe, who is return to court for a preliminary hearing Sept. 28, had yet to be released, the newspaper said.
