VENICE, Fla., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- A Florida couple have been accused of treating their two children cruelly by making them live in squalid conditions without clothes, authorities say.
Kristina Reilly, 28, and James McArdle, 29, of Venice, Fla., were held without bond in the Sarasota County Jail on child neglect charges, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported. McArdle also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
A Sarasota County Sheriff's Office report said investigators found the children, whose ages were not provided, naked in a bedroom with a dirty mattress and mildew-soiled pillows. The report stated one child had a large burn mark on the stomach.
Deputy David Miller said the house was filled with the odor of human feces, which McArdle attributed to a septic backup, the newspaper said. The police report said an inch of raw sewage was discovered in a bedroom and a bathroom toilet was overflowing with feces.
A marijuana-smoking device and other drug paraphernalia also were allegedly found in the residence.
The two children were placed in protective custody, the newspaper said.
