Third executive admits Navy kickback scheme

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The former director of contracts for a defense company has admitted participating in a kickback scheme involving a U.S. Navy facility in Rhode Island.

Patrick Nagle is the third executive with the now-defunct Advanced Solutions for Tomorrow to plead guilty, The Providence Journal reported. Prosecutors said he has been cooperating in the investigation of the company.

ASFT was headquartered in Georgia but had a branch in Middletown, R.I. The scheme involved the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport.

Anjan Dutta-Gupta, owner of ASFT, and Russell Spencer, a longtime General Dynamics employee who served as a consultant to the company, have also pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing, the Journal said. Ralph M. Mariano, a civilian employee of the Navy, is awaiting trial.

At a hearing Tuesday before a federal judge in Providence, Nagle admitted participating in the scheme for more than a decade, approving inflated invoices and paying millions of dollars in kickbacks.

Nagle faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced next year.
