101-year-old woman evicted from home

DETROIT, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A 101-year-old Detroit woman and two of her sons have been evicted from their home after failing to pay $59.95 in property taxes, authorities said.

Texana Hollis and her sons were evicted Monday from the home where they've lived since 1953 for failing to pay the taxes to keep a mortgage they took out in 2002, The Detroit News reported.

"It just didn't seem like this would happen," 64-year-old Warren Hollis, one of the sons, said, adding he saw foreclosure notices beginning in November. "I guess it was a little naive of me to think that. I was a fool."

Hollis said he took out a $32,000 mortgage from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2002 to pay for home repairs.

HUD told him he had to pay only taxes to keep the house, he said, and he ignored months of foreclosure notices, believing nobody would evict a 101-year-old woman.

Officials said they were investigating the eviction.

"We are trying to get to the bottom of it," Wayne County Chief Deputy Treasurer David Szymanski said, noting that HUD, not the county, finalized the eviction.
