SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Police in California say a man shot and killed a 3-year-old girl because he was angry someone in her house interrupted him while he was assaulting a woman.

Police said they believe there are witnesses to the Monday night shooting, in which the man also critically wounded a pregnant woman and another 3-year-old, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

Police said the man opened fire on a crowded patio at the San Bernardino home where the victims were shot.

Both 3-year-olds were shot in the head. The one who was killed was identified as Nylah Franco-Torrez. The girl who survived was listed in critical condition at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

The pregnant woman was shot in the neck and jaw and her fetus was unharmed, police said.

Police Lt. Gwendolyn Waters said someone at the home where the shooting occurred had seen the shooter beating a woman nearby and went to break up the incident.

"Somebody from that residence intervened and did a good thing," Waters said.
