Contempt charge possible for Edwards aide

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Andrew Young, an aide who helped ex-U.S. Sen. John Edwards keep his fathering of an out-of-wedlock daughter under wraps, could face a contempt-of-court charge.

Young, his wife Cheri and two lawyers must appear before a North Carolina judge in Orange County to determine if they violated a court order, The Herald Sun of Durham reported.

Edwards, a North Carolina Democratic who was his party's vice presidential nominee in 2004, became embroiled in scandal following his 2008 presidential campaign when reports surfaced that he had fathered a child with a woman working as a campaign videographer. Young at first said he was the father of Rielle Hunter's child.

Hunter's lawyers say the Youngs violated a court order by handing depositions they had given in a civil suit to federal prosecutors investigating Edwards. He is under indictment for allegedly using campaign funds in the cover-up.

In her lawsuit, Hunter says the Youngs stole a sex tape and other items. They say she abandoned them by leaving them when she moved.

Superior Court Judge Michael Morgan said another judge ordered the Youngs to inform Hunter's lawyers if any other party requested access to their depositions. He said the Youngs clearly did not do that.
