LAS VEGAS, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A Las Vegas police officer was wounded and a suspect was killed Friday in a shootout inside a Walmart store, officials said.
The shots were fired when a group of officers confronted an unidentified man and woman who were allegedly trying to use a fraudulent bank card to make a purchase.
"Thank god he was wearing a bulletproof vest," Sheriff Doug Gillespie told the Las Vegas Review-Journal at the hospital where the injured officer was being treated for wounds to his chest and arm.
A witness told the newspaper he saw the officers talking to the two suspects moments before the man allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and did not think the situation appeared volatile. "If it had been more interesting, I would have stayed and watched," said the witness, who identified himself only as David.
The female suspect was arrested. Her name and the charges she faced were not immediately known.
