Woman's husband donates kidney to her ex

CANTON, Conn., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The husband of a Canton, Conn., woman who donated a kidney to her ex-husband said it would create a lifelong bond between the two men.

Steve Leopard, Kim Leopard's husband of less than a year, donated a kidney to her ex-husband, Jeff Laviero, of Bristol in a transplant Thursday at Yale-New Haven Hospital, The Hartford Courant reported.

She says both were doing well.

Laviero, a 46-year-old who had been a rock climber, lost both his kidneys because of a medical condition and had to cut back considerably on outdoor activities with his daughters, Brianna, 16, and Katie, 18.

Steve Leopard, who has daughters around the same age from his first marriage, was thinking of Laviero's daughters when he decided to get tested as a possible kidney donor.

When he learned of the match, he said he had no doubt he would donate a kidney.

"It's going to create a special bond between us for the rest of our lives," Leopard, 51, said Wednesday. "It sounds like a bigger deal than I think it is. I know it's a good thing, but it makes me feel so good."
