Top Bloomberg aide quit after arrest

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Former New York Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith was arrested in Washington on a domestic violence charge shortly before his resignation, police records show.

Goldsmith was arrested July 30 after what police described as a violent fight with his wife in their townhouse, the New York Post reported Thursday. He was freed from jail two days later.

When he resigned a few days after the incident, neither Goldsmith nor anyone else in the administration of Mayor Michael Bloomberg mentioned the arrest, The New York Times said. Goldsmith released a statement saying he was planning to "pursue private-sector opportunities in infrastructure finance."

At the time, many observers believed Goldsmith, who was deputy mayor for operations, had been forced out because of criticism of snow removal efforts last winter, the Times said.

Goldsmith served two terms as mayor of Indianapolis in the 1990s, wrote books about public administration and taught at Harvard before joining the Bloomberg administration.

Goldsmith told the Post he had not used violence against his wife and said he quit to avoid embarrassing Bloomberg.
