Judge's son gets prison for casino heist

LAS VEGAS, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- The son of a former Las Vegas judge was sentenced to three to 11 years in prison for robbing the Bellagio Casino of $1.5 million in chips.

Anthony Carleo, 29, who admitted both robberies, faces a second sentencing Thursday for a heist at the Suncoast that brought him almost $19,000, the Las Vegas Sun reported. His lawyer, William Terry, said he will ask for the sentences to be served concurrently.

Carleo, the son of former Las Vegas Municipal Judge George Assad, apologized at Tuesday's sentencing.

"I'm very sorry for everything I've done," he told Judge Michelle Leavitt. "I owe my mother and my father an apology."

The Bellagio robbery, which Carleo carried out wearing a motorcycle helmet, was spectacular. But Terry argued the casino's actual loss was low because most of the chips were either recovered or unusable.

Leavitt postponed deciding on restitution.

Terry argued Carleo's troubles come from drug and gambling addictions that began when he was a student at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Prosecutors pointed to his careful planning and use of firearms.
