Woman pleads no contest to texting death

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles woman has pleaded no contest to killing an elderly man with her car while texting and avoided jail time, officials say.

Ani Voskanian, 21, was sentenced by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Patrick Hegarty Friday to serve three years of probation, 300 hours of community service, and must create an educational lecture about the dangers of texting while driving for junior and high school students, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The woman, who pleaded no contest to felony manslaughter for killing Misak Ranjbar, 80, of Glendale, also had her driving license revoked for three years and will not be able to have a cellphone while inside a vehicle.

"In this particular case, there is a tragic loss of a father of a family. On the other hand, another family could have lost their daughter," said Glendale Police Detective Ashraf Mankarios. "Although she will suffer the consequence as the result of this, in the end, both families came together, hugged and appear to be healing."
