Casey Anthony's attorney under Florida Bar probe

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The Florida Bar says it's investigating attorney Jose Baez, who successfully defended Casey Anthony in the death of her daughter, over his client's probation.

Meanwhile, lawyers for Casey Anthony asked a Florida appeals court Wednesday to overrule an order requiring her to return to Orlando to serve a year's probation on a check fraud conviction, CNN reported.

Orange County Chief Judge Belvin Perry Jr. last week ruled Anthony must report for probation on the bad-check charge by Aug. 26, but her attorneys say she served that sentence while awaiting trial in her daughter's death.

Anthony was acquitted last month on charges of killing daughter Caylee Marie, 2, and has been in seclusion since.

A bar spokeswoman told the Orlando Sentinel no other information about the investigation is public, the Sentinel said. It's unclear who initiated the inquiry.

During the hearing, Perry asked the defense team if it knew Anthony was serving her probation while jailed. One attorney said they did, but didn't think they were required to notify the court.

Perry issued an order stating Anthony must report to probation. In his order, Perry chastised the attorneys, saying, "The failure to abide by that order and the failure to notify the court of a known scrivener's error in the order may be a violation of an attorney's duty of candor."

"No attorney should conduct himself or herself in a way that impedes an order of the court," Perry said. "Our system of justice should never be in the position of rewarding someone who willfully hides the ball."

Anthony's attorneys filed an emergency petition Wednesday with Florida's 5th District Court of Appeal, asking the court to overturn Perry's order, CNN reported. The appellate court also was asked to deny Perry further jurisdiction in the case.
