PITTSBURGH, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Identity thieves have stolen information from at least 29 Pittsburgh city employees, police say.
Detective Christopher Jordan informed Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and other officials of the breach in an e-mail over the weekend, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
The workers, who were not identified, got PayPal bills for purchases they never made after thieves set up accounts using their names, addresses and at least partial Social Security numbers. Jordan did not say how the information might have been obtained.
"Some transactions are already made to the accounts and the balances range from $40 to $3,000. No one is out of pocket anything at this time," he said. "More information is forthcoming as we submit all the necessary search warrants and follow-up leads."
Potential victims of the scam are urged to notify their banks, credit reporting agencies and PayPal and check for unauthorized purchases.
