Congresswoman's vehicle hit by police car

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington, D.C.'s, non-voting delegate to the U.S. House, said a police car hit her car in a minor weekend accident. No one was injured.

Norton told The Washington Post she was driving home from shopping around 9:30 Sunday morning when a Metropolitan Police Department vehicle struck the front end of her car on the driver's side.

Norton, 74, a veteran of the civil rights and feminist movements who has been the district's non-voting delegate in Congress for 20 years, said the officer who drove the police vehicle told her he was sorry to meet her for the first time under such circumstances.

"My constituents came up to see if I was OK," Norton said. "I assured them everything was OK."

Her car was towed away, and police gave her a ride home with her packages, she said.

A police spokesman said he had no details on where the police car was headed, how fast it was traveling or whether its sirens were on.
