NEW YORK, July 25 (UPI) -- Opponents of same-sex marriage filed suit against New York's new law Monday, a day after the first weddings it legalized.
New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedom is seeking an injunction to stop the Marriage Equality Act, asserting that state Senate debate rules and open meeting laws were violated before it was passed June 24, CNN reports.
NYCF and its lawyers, Liberty Counsel, say New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg held an illegal closed meeting with Republican senators to lobby them for the bill and promised campaign funds to them, that Gov. Andrew Cuomo bypassed a three-day waiting period before the vote "by unjustifiably issuing a message of necessity," and the public was "denied access to elected representatives."
"Today we are asking the court to intervene in its rightful role as the check and balance on an out-of-control state Legislature," said the Rev. Jason McGuire, NYCF's director.
A Cuomo spokesman told New York 1 TV those challenging the law "lack a basic understanding of the laws of the state of New York."
"The suit is without merit," the governor said.
Spokesmen for Republican Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman declined comment on the suit, The New York Times reported.
