No verdict in Ohio serial killing trial

CLEVELAND, July 21 (UPI) -- The jury in the trial of a Cleveland man accused of killing 11 women spent its first full day in deliberations Thursday without reaching a verdict.

If they find Anthony Sowell, 51, guilty of first-degree murder, the same jurors will decide on the penalty, The Plain Dealer reported.

Jurors began discussing the verdict Wednesday after closing arguments and instructions from the judge. On Thursday, they spent a full day in deliberations before leaving for their hotel at 6:30 p.m. EDT.

Sowell allegedly killed 11 women whose bodies were found in his house or buried on the property in 2009. He is accused of assaulting several victims.

Deliberations were scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. Friday.
