Pa. man apparently killed by lightning

MIDDLETOWN, Pa., July 20 (UPI) -- A man found dead in his yard Tuesday in a Philadelphia suburb appears to have been struck by lightning, Pennsylvania State Police said.

David Toy, 62, of Middletown, was pronounced dead by emergency workers just after 6 p.m. EDT, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

A neighbor said she heard a loud burst of thunder right around that time. Louise Lorenz said she was in her house and did not see what was happening outside.

"It scared us," she said. "It was so close."

The Philadelphia area was hit by thunderstorms late Tuesday afternoon after a day of oppressive heat and humidity, with temperatures in the 90s.

The Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to do an autopsy Wednesday, KYW-TV, Philadelphia, reported.
