Man pleads not guilty to killing family

SAN DIEGO, July 20 (UPI) -- A San Diego man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the stabbing deaths of his mother and his younger sister, officials say.

Brian Rockwell Williams, 24, was arrested Monday after the bodies of his police detective mother Donna Williams, 52, and sister Briana, 18, were found at their home, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Neighbors reported hearing a woman's scream about 1:15 a.m. Monday.

Donna Williams was found in her daughter's bedroom with two stab wounds to her abdomen, a gash across her throat and defensive wounds on her hands, District Attorney Kristen Spieler said.

Briana Williams, who also had been stabbed multiple times, was found outside the home. She allegedly had been pushed off a balcony after struggling with a 6-foot tall, 300-pound man.

Public Defender Richard Gates said he would be introducing evidence that would show the suspect had a history of mental illness that was going untreated at the time of the slayings.

Brian Williams, who could be sentenced to up to 52 years in prison if convicted, was being held without bail.
