Blagojevich posts $450,000 bond

CHICAGO, July 15 (UPI) -- A federal judge ordered former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to post a $450,000 bond Friday, secured by his Chicago house and a Washington condo.

U.S. District Judge James Zagel rejected prosecutors' request for a $1 million bond, the Chicago Tribune reported. At the hearing, prosecutors said Blagojevich had violated conditions for his continued freedom set when he was convicted of wire fraud, bribery and conspiracy.

"I understand the symbolism of a million dollars, but $450,000 is enough," Zagel said.

Blagojevich and his wife Patti said they have about $600,000 equity in the two properties. Zagel warned the couple they could lose both if Blagojevich does not obey conditions, which include getting permission before traveling outside of northern Illinois.

Blagojevich's lawyers said the couple are trying to sell their Chicago home. The former governor refused to comment in a brief chat with reporters outside the courthouse.

"Patti and I were here to comply, as we always try to do with all the different rules, and we signed all the necessary papers," Blagojevich said. "We'll see you guys."
