Gov. Perry makes video for prayer event

AUSTIN, Texas, July 12 (UPI) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a potential candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has released a video promoting a day of prayer.

The Response, scheduled for Aug. 6 at Reliant Stadium in Austin, is sponsored by the American Family Association, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Perry is giving the event his active support.

"As an elected leader, I'm all too aware of government's limitations when it comes to fixing things that are spiritual in nature," Perry said in the video. "That's where prayer comes in, and we need it more than ever. With the economy in trouble, communities in crisis and people adrift in a sea of moral relativism, we need God's help."

The American Family Association is a conservative evangelical group whose agenda includes boycotts of companies that instruct employees to use the phrase "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" and that offer benefits to same-sex partners. The group also urged passage of a law barring members of Congress from using anything except the Bible for swearing-in ceremonies and protested plans to have a Hindu religious leader give a U.S. Senate invocation in 2007.
