WHITMORE LAKE, Mich., July 3 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, R-Mich., formally announced he would run for president at a rock concert sponsored by a conservative radio station.
McCotter filed required paperwork Friday and he publicly announced his candidacy at a rock festival in Whitmore Lake, Mich., Saturday evening, The Detroit News reported.
"While it is a hard road ahead, we will have better days and we will start now," McCotter told the crowd of more than 400.
McCotter is not as familiar to potential voters as other Republican candidates, such fellow House members Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, who is popular among Tea Party members, and Ron Paul of Texas, who has strong libertarian leanings, the newspaper said.
"What we need in Washington is someone who understands that the wave of the future is not big government, but self-government," McCotter said in a Detroit Free Press report. "That is why I'm announcing my candidacy today for the Republican nomination to serve as your president of the United States."
