LANSING, Mich., July 3 (UPI) -- The campaign to organize a vote to recall Republican Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has reached its halfway point with no word on the number of signatures collected.
To put the recall to voters, the campaign must collect more than 800,000 petition signatures by Aug. 5, the Detroit Free Press reported. Insiders on the campaign have yet to say how many signatures they have.
Just under 22,500 people had "liked" the Recall Snyder Facebook page and just $15,143 had been raised on ActBlue.com, an online fund-raising tool for liberal causes and candidates, as of Thursday.
The Snyder recall attempt kicked off at the state Capitol May 21 with a rally, and has progressed to volunteers setting up roadside stands to collect signatures. About 3,000 people signed up to be canvassers.
Mark Grebner, an East Lansing political consultant, expressed a skepticism about the recall effort.
"There's just a lot more to doing something like that than people realize," Grebner said. "If someone asked me how much it would cost to run a statewide recall campaign, I would say, 'Probably $10 million ... no less than $5 million.'"
Yet, canvassers stay hopeful. Susan Pearson, 26, of Mulliken said she doesn't think it's an insurmountable goal.
"It's only impossible if we don't try," she said.
