Woman run over by train, survives

SAN FRANCISCO, July 1 (UPI) -- A woman who jumped on the tracks of the San Francisco BART commuter service and had a train pass over her escaped with cuts and bruises, authorities said.

A train operator spotted the woman, said be in her 40s, on the southbound tracks at the system's Glen Park Station Friday morning, BART spokesman Linton Johnson said.

The operator hit the "stop" button but was unable to halt the train in time and several cars rolled over the woman, who escaped major injury because she ended up in the space between the rails, Johnson said.

Transit police and rescue workers responding to emergency calls found the woman sitting near the top of some stairs at the station with her head in her hands, Johnson said.

It wasn't known how she escaped from under the train, he said.

BART officials labeled the incident a suicide attempt.

The woman, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital with cuts and bruises, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Service at the Glen Park Station was suspended for about an hour, officials said.
