Smoking incident allegedly led to shooting

PHILADELPHIA, June 29 (UPI) -- A 45-year-old man was charged Tuesday with shooting up a Philadelphia bar, killing one person, after he was kicked out for smoking.

Wayne James was arrested after police released a security videotape that showed a clear view of his face, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Police Capt. James Clark said investigators got several tips, including the suspect's name and address.

Five people were wounded early Sunday in the shooting in the Genesis Bar in the city's Nicetown neighborhood. Carl Sharper, 45, died.

The shooting occurred on an exceptionally violent weekend in Philadelphia. Police said 26 people were wounded and six killed in 20 shooting incidents in three days, and another person died after being stabbed.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said the weekend was the worst he has seen in his 3 1/2 years in the city.

"I don't know if we've ever had any more over a three-day period," he said of the shootings during a news conference Monday at Police Headquarters. "This certainly ranks right at the top, if not the top. It shows just how violent it can become on the streets of our city."
