Poll: Afghan pullout has broad support

PRINCETON, N.J., June 29 (UPI) -- Americans broadly support President Obama's plan to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan beginning this year, a Gallup poll released Wednesday indicates.

Results indicate 72 percent favor the plan to withdraw forces this year, with additional troops scheduled to leave by the end of next summer and the remainder by 2014. Twenty-three percent said they oppose the plan.

The survey indicated a more mixed reaction to the near-term goal of pulling 30,000 U.S. troops out of Afghanistan in 15 months, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said. Forty-three percent of Americans said they thought the number was about right, while 29 percent said it was too low and 19 percent said it was too high.

Concerning the actual timetable, Americans were split, with about 30 percent endorsing Obama's schedule, a third saying they thought troops should be withdrawn sooner and 31 percent saying there shouldn't be a timetable, Gallup said.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews conducted with 1,034 adults Saturday and Sunday on the Gallup Daily tracking survey. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
