ALBUQUERQUE, June 24 (UPI) -- Police say they arrested a past president of the University of New Mexico in an alleged online New Jersey prostitution ring.
F. Chris Garcia, 71, a professor of political science at UNM, was arrested by Albuquerque police and charged with promoting prostitution, conspiracy and tampering with evidence, The New York Times reported Friday.
The Albuquerque Journal said he was released later Thursday. He served as president of the university from 2002 to 2003.
Officials said Garcia's job was to recruit prostitutes for David Flory, 68, of New York. Flory is a physics professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey and investigators said he operates the Web site Southwest Companions.
Police said Garcia's role was as a member of the Web site's "Hunt Club," which signed up new prostitutes.
Flory, who lives in Manhattan, was charged with 40 felony counts. Police said he set up the sex site, which allegedly hooked up about 200 prostitutes with as many as 1,400 customers.
