U.S. public opinion on Libya shifts

PRINCETON, N.J., June 24 (UPI) -- Republicans have become more opposed to U.S. military action in Libya in the past three months, a Gallup Poll released Friday indicated.

Democrats are now the only group that supports intervention in support of Libyan rebels, with 54 percent approving it. Independents are the most negative.

Views among Republicans have shifted the most since March when 57 percent approved of the bombing, Gallup said. That has dropped to 39 percent, presumably reflecting criticism by Republican presidential candidates and legislators.

Overall, 46 percent of respondents disapproved of military action, 39 percent approved and 15 percent had no opinion. In March, 47 percent approved, 37 percent disapproved and 16 percent had no opinion.

Gallup explored the reasons respondents held their views and found more concern with substance than process. Almost two-thirds, 64 percent, of those who disapproved said they did not believe the United States should be in Libya, while 29 percent said President Barack Obama should not have acted without authorization from Congress.

Gallup surveyed 999 adults by telephone Wednesday. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
