Engine problem forces emergency landing

ATLANTA, June 21 (UPI) -- Engine problems forced a Delta Air Lines plane traveling to Los Angeles to return to Atlanta for an emergency landing, airline officials said.

A Delta spokeswoman said Flight 1323 departed Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport at 11:51 p.m. Monday but returned minutes later after experiencing engine problems, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

Delta spokeswoman Chris Kelly Singley said three passengers sustained minor injuries, apparently as they were going down the plane's evacuation slides.

"The cockpit crew elected to return back to Atlanta for mechanical evaluation," Singley told several Atlanta-area radio stations. "The flight landed safely and emergency vehicles assisted the aircraft once it was on the ground."

Singley did not provide further information about the engine problem, the Journal-Constitution said. Delta also did not confirm media reports in Atlanta and Los Angeles about an engine catching fire during flight.
