Officials said Davis is the first Muncie firefighter killed in more than 50 years.

The roof of the church collapsed about 20 minutes after the first companies arrived just before 4 p.m.

"It was just phenomenal," Vince West, who lives near the church, said. "Fire ravages everything quick. It took that roof quickly."

Two other firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire was being investigated.

Davis, 40, had three children, officials said. He was a former chief in the Yorktown, Ind., fire department.
