Missing police cadet's boyfriend a suspect

CLEARWATER, Fla., June 15 (UPI) -- Florida investigators say the boyfriend of a missing police cadet is a suspect in her disappearance and presumed killing.

Kelly Rothwell, 35, has not been seen since mid-March. She had been sharing an apartment in Indian Rocks Beach with David Perry, 47, but told the friend who last saw her she was planning to end the relationship and move out.

Pinellas County sheriff's investigators said they tried to interview Perry last week in Elmira, N.Y., the St. Petersburg Times reported. Perry, who left Florida abruptly when Rothwell was reported missing, was at a police station dealing with an impounded vehicle.

"In seeing us, he became extremely unnerved and basically fled the police station," said Michael Bailey, a sheriff's detective.

Perry was declared a suspect Tuesday. He has not been charged with abducting or killing Rothwell but faces charges in New York of faking an injury to retire on disability in 2003 from his job as a state corrections officer.
