NEW YORK, June 12 (UPI) -- Violence in Afghanistan hit a high last month with at least 368 civilians dead in May, United Nations officials say.
Besides those civilians killed in conflicts between anti-government and pro-government forces in Afghanistan last month, at least 600 people were injured, the United Nations reported Saturday. It was the most people killed in any single month since 2007.
The anti-government forces have been responsible for most of the bloodshed, including 82 percent of the deaths. Improvised explosive devices being used by the anti-government forces caused the most casualties, 41 percent of deaths.
"We are very concerned that civilian suffering will increase even more over the summer fighting season which historically brings the highest numbers of civilian casualties," Georgette Gagnon, director of human rights for the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, said in a statement.
