Counter-terrorism chief steps down

WASHINGTON, June 9 (UPI) -- Michael Leiter, director of the National Counter-terrorism Center, is stepping down, the White House said Thursday.

President Obama lauded Leiter's four years on the job -- beginning under President George W. Bush -- saying he led the center "with dedication and unwavering determination during challenging and demanding times," the White House said in a statement.

"Mike has been a trusted adviser to me and to the entire national security team, providing us with an in-depth understanding of terrorist activities that affect our nation's security," Obama said. "I am confident that Mike will be leaving the National Counter-terrorism Center, the counter-terrorism community, and the nation in a significantly stronger position to confront the terrorist threats we face."

Neither a reason nor an effective date were for Leiter's departure.
