Woman drops anti-circumcision drive

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 7 (UPI) -- A woman seeking a ban on circumcision in Santa Monica, Calif., has decided to abandon her plan, the mayor said Tuesday.

Mayor Richard Bloom told the Los Angeles Times that Jena Troutman has assured him she has halted her effort to get the circumcision ban on the ballot. He said Troutman had not yet officially withdrawn her notice of intent to circulate a petition for a referendum.

Troutman told the Jewish Journal the ballot initiative has been a victim of "misrepresentation" by the news media.

A similar referendum is expected to be on the ballot in San Francisco in November.

Male Jewish and Muslim babies are required to be circumcised, and some other religions also require it. Circumcision also appears to help prevent AIDS and some other infections.
