St. Louis region feels 4.2 earthquake

ST. LOUIS, June 7 (UPI) -- A magnitude 4.2 earthquake rattled the St. Louis region early Tuesday, waking thousands of residents but with no reports of damage, officials said.

About 2,600 people logged onto the U.S. Geological Survey's Web site to report having felt the quake in Washington County, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

The epicenter of the temblor was six miles from the city of Richwoods, said Jessica Sigala, a geophysicist with the USGS in Golden, Colo.

Most people said it was very subtle shaking or swaying, although in some areas a more intense shaking was reported, with people saying dishes, windows and doors rattled and the walls made a cracking sound.

"It may have felt like a heavy truck striking the building," Sigala said.

Some Illinois communities reported feeling the earthquake, and other reports came into the USGS Web site from as far away as Kentucky, Ohio and Alabama.
