Suspect arrested in Texas cop-killing

SAN ANTONIO, June 6 (UPI) -- Texas authorities Monday held a man who allegedly confessed to a friend he had killed a sheriff's officer, authorities say.

Mark Gonzales was arrested Sunday and was held in the Bexar County Jail in San Antonio on one count of capital murder in the May 28 death of Sgt. Kenneth Vann. Bail has been set at $1.5 million, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

The arrest affidavit states that Gonzales called a friend and said, "I killed a cop. Don't tell no one, not even your wife."

Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz said a tip led to the arrest.

Vann was on his way to a shooting scene around 2 a.m. May 28 when he was shot several times by a .223-caliber weapon at a stop light. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Gonzales and his friend were driving to a restaurant in two vehicles and Gonzales stopped next to Vann's patrol car. The friend "heard several pops," the affidavit states, and then the suspect called him.

Bexar County and FBI SWAT teams stormed Gonzales' home Sunday and arrested him without incident. A weapon similar to the one that killed Vann was found at the home, the sheriff's office said.
