GAINESVILLE, Fla., June 1 (UPI) -- A Florida woman suffered a broken leg when she was struck by a sturgeon that leaped up in front of an air boat in which she was a passenger, authorities said.

Fletcher, 25, of Cross City, was a passenger on the air boat that was traveling at about 10 mph and in front of a public boat ramp when the incident occurred, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman Karen Parker said.

Witnesses told FWC officers the fish appeared to weigh between 60 and 75 pounds and fell back into the river after the collision.

FWC officials said five people have been injured by jumping sturgeon so far this year.
