Firefighters battle Florida brush fires

ORLANDO, Fla., May 30 (UPI) -- Firefighters in Florida are trying to extinguish brush fires in Orange and Volusia counties, many of them sparked by weekend lightning storms, authorities say.

Orange County firefighters worked with a state Division of Forestry contingent of four bulldozers, an airplane and a helicopter to keep a 1,000-acre blaze away from a Lockheed Martin Corp. weapons-testing facility, the Orlando Sentinel reported Monday.

Meanwhile, a number of lightning-sparked fires in Volusia Country were being driven by strong winds that spread embers and started new blazes, county spokeswoman Pat Kuehn said.

"An evacuation has not been ordered, but we are asking residents to turn on their sprinklers and hose down their roofs," she said.

The largest blaze, at Daytona Park, grew from 118 acres to 150 Monday, Kuehn said.

A number of other fires range from half an acre to 5 acres but were spreading quickly, the Sentinel reported.

Firefighters have been dispatched from various county and state agencies, and Brevard County firefighters were on stand-by, Kuehn said.
