Pot bust nets $5 million in plants

CHICAGO, May 28 (UPI) -- Two Chicago residents have been charged with growing more than $5 million worth of marijuana in two homes in Joliet, officials said.

Sinh Tran Dinh, 50, and Ha Tran Pham, 43, were charged with the manufacture and sale of over 5,000 grams of cannabis, as well as the possession of more than 200 marijuana plants, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. There are 28 grams in an ounce.

Police confiscated more than 700 marijuana plants from the two homes. Investigators said the plants were being grown hydroponically -- or without soil -- and the homes were rigged with special ventilation.

The arrests came after previous drug raids by the Cook County Sheriff's Police South Narcotics Unit pointed to the alleged grow houses. They were also charged with the theft of electricity.

Dinh and Pham were released on $200,000 bonds.
