A fire department spokesman told The San Diego Union-Tribune that it initially appeared that all four had apparently drowned; however the investigation was taken over by police detectives.

"We don't know exactly what we have at this point," Police Lt. Ernie Herbert told reporters. "We have to sort through it very carefully."

Neighbors told KGTV-TV, San Diego, they believed the victims were all members of the family that lived in the house, located on a cul-de-sac in a middle-class neighborhood. The couple had two girls, ages 7 and 17.

The bodies were discovered around dawn by a relative of the family that lives in the home.
