NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., May 23 (UPI) -- A Rutgers University student pleaded not guilty Monday to spying on his roommate, who killed himself.

Dharun Ravi, 19, of Plainsboro, N.J., did not speak at his appearance in Middlesex County court in New Brunswick, but his lawyer, Steve Altman, entered a not guilty plea to 15 charges, The (Newark) Star-Ledger reported.

Ravi is accused of showing Tyler Clementi's intimate encounter with another man in September to other students via webcam. Days later, Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge.

The most serious charge of bias intimidation, that Ravi acted because Clementi was gay, could get him 10 years in prison. Other counts include invasion of privacy.

After the arraignment, Clementi's father Joseph, of Ridgewood, N.J., said: "Our family is grateful for all the work done by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. We are eager to see the criminal justice process move forward."
