Runoff election: Incumbent justice winner

MADISON, Wis., May 23 (UPI) -- Wisconsin elections officials Monday certified the recount of a month-old election for state Supreme Court, declaring Justice David Prosser winner.

"I look forward to taking the oath of office and continuing to serve in a fair and independent manner as a member of the Wisconsin Supreme Court," Prosser said a statement.

Prosser won another 10-year term to the bench of the state Supreme Court by 7,004 votes over Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg, who had asked for the recount following her loss in the April 5 election.

Kloppenburg, who has alleged there were extensive election anomalies has until May 31 to contest the election if she so chooses, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

"It was not a surprise that minor mistakes were discovered, investigated and corrected," Government Accountability Board Chairman Thomas Barland said. "This happens in all elections."
