Obama: Pakistan havens not off limits

WASHINGTON, May 22 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said he would order another raid into Pakistan in order kill or capture a high-ranking terrorist.

Obama said in an interview with the BBC that his job was to maintain the security of the United States and he could not allow al-Qaida to plot attacks in relative safety.

"We are very respectful of the sovereignty of Pakistan, but we cannot allow someone ... to kill our people or our allies' people," Obama said before his Sunday night departure to Ireland. "We cannot allow those kinds of active plans to come to fruition without us taking some action."

The May 2 raid by U.S. commandos on Osama bin Laden's residence in Pakistan caused an uproar in Pakistan. But Obama told the BBC he was hopeful the incident would act as a "wake-up call" leading to a better and more productive relationship between the two allies.

The ultimate achievement, the president said, would be to convince the Taliban it was time to negotiate a peace deal in neighboring Afghanistan.
