Eight injured when truck strikes crowd

CHICAGO, May 22 (UPI) -- Eight people, including a toddler, were injured when a city worker lost control of his vehicle, striking participants in a photo shoot, Chicago police said.

Police said the child, about 2 years old, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in Saturday's accident, but two of the six adults were "very critically" injured, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Sunday.

One of the critically injured victims was a caregiver to the injured toddler, police said.

Investigators said the vehicle struck the participants of a wedding photo shoot shortly after noon Saturday. Witnesses said flowers from the photo shoot were scattered around the accident scene.

"The driver lost control," Chicago Police Spokesman John Mirabelli said. "He collided with this photo shoot and any bystanders nearby."

Mirabelli didn't say what caused the driver to lose control.

Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado said in a Chicago Tribune report the victims were taken to several area hospitals for treatment.

The driver wasn't identified, and neither were any of the victims.
