Kilpatrick's parole could be delayed

DETROIT, May 21 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's parole on state charges could be delayed because the Parole Board wants more information, a Michigan official said.

Russ Marlan, a spokesman for the state Corrections Department, said the board especially wants more details about the federal corruption case, the Detroit Free Press reported. He said that could delay the board's decision by as much as 60 days.

"The part that makes them a little uneasy is they're paroling someone that's facing multiple felony charges. It's typically something we don't do," Marlan said.

But Marlan said federal prosecutors have said they have no objection to Kilpatrick's release, which he described as a "mitigating factor."

Kilpatrick would be eligible for parole July 24. He is serving a state sentence for violating probation after he admitted he lied on a deposition in a police whistle-blower suit.

The federal corruption indictment was handed up while he was in prison.
