Tombstone falls, critically injures woman

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 19 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts woman was in critical condition after a 10,000 pound tombstone fell over on her as she attempted to move it, fire department officials said.

Nancy Power, 56, of Springfield, the co-owner of Venezian Monumental Works, was pinned to the ground when the gravestone fell on her, causing serious injuries to her upper body, WWLP-TV, Springfield, reported.

Had the stone landed on her arm or leg, it would have crushed it, said Springfield Fire Department Spokesman Dennis Leger.

Firefighters used air bags and hydraulic equipment to lift the stone off of Power.

Power was taken to Baystate Medical Center for treatment.
